GapFill Help

Getting started

Setup takes about five minutes. After that GapFill only records what it would send, and nothing goes to GA4 until you approve.

Before you start

  • Your store already sends purchases to GA4
Through the Google & YouTube app, Google Tag Manager or theme code. GapFill fills the gaps; it does not replace your GA4 tag.
  • A Google account with Editor access to the GA4 property
Viewer access is enough to see the report. Approving sending creates a Measurement Protocol secret, which needs Editor.
  • At least 20 purchases in GA4 in the last 30 days
GapFill learns from your real GA4 data how your tag sends transaction IDs and values.
  1. Connect Google Analytics1 min

Open GapFill from Apps in your Shopify admin. The setup guide on Home shows the next step. Click Connect with Google and sign in.

What GapFill does with this access

It reads purchase data from GA4. It writes one thing only: when you approve sending, it creates one Measurement Protocol secret. It changes nothing else in your GA4 settings.

  2. Choose your GA4 property1 min

Choose the property your store’s tag sends to, and click Use this property. GapFill starts building the missing purchases report right away.

You can change the property later under Settings.
    If you have several properties

Pick the one whose Measurement ID (it starts with G-) is the ID in your store’s tag. With the wrong property, orders and GA4 purchases don’t match and the report can’t be built.

  3. Check the missing purchases reportFree

The report shows how many of the last 30 days’ orders are not tracked as purchases in GA4, and how much revenue that is. Shopify orders are on the left, and how GA4 covers them is on the right. Everything on the right that isn’t blue is what GA4 is missing today.

Everything up to here is free. See how large the gap is in your own store before you decide to go further.

  4. Start the paid plan (starts with a dry run)14-day free trial

Sending to GA4 needs the Standard plan ($19 per month, with a 14-day free trial). Start it from the setup guide or from Billing, and Shopify shows the approval page.

Nothing is sent to GA4 until you approve. Every hour GapFill only records the orders it would send. Open History to check each order, its amount, and why it would be sent or skipped.

Home during the dry run. The planned count and revenue build up day by day.
  5. Review the results and approve sendingWhenever you are ready

Once the first check has finished (within an hour), an Approve sending section appears on Home. You can approve at any time, though we recommend watching the planned sends for a few days first. Then check both boxes and click Start sending.

The button becomes active once both boxes are checked.
    Before you approve

Data sent to GA4 can’t be deleted or undone later. Use the dry run to make sure the orders and amounts look right first.

From then on, GapFill checks every hour and sends orders that GA4 still hasn’t tracked 26 hours after they were placed. Orders older than 70 hours are not sent.
